Welcome to the website of the LIFE LOGOS 4 WATERS project in Cooperation for climate-conscious river basin management!

You are in the right place if you want to learn more about adapting to climate change, reducing your exposure to extreme weather events, or retain water locally in the landscape.

The implementation of the 4-year-long project started on the 1st October 2021 under the leadership of the coordinating beneficiary Ministry of Interior of Hungary. It was transferred to the Ministry of Public Administration and Regional Development established on 1st January 2024, as an important part of the local government specialty. Seven other partners (as associated beneficiaries) are involved in the successful implementation of the project: two Hungarian municipalities, which will develop natural water retention measures in their small catchments, and five professional organizations with relevant expertise and experiences in engineering design, water management, nature conservation and climate-conscious municipalities.

The project is key importance not only for the cooperating partners, but also at the national level, given that we want to disseminate knowledge and good practices on water retention throughout the country. To this end, we have planned a number of activities during the project, which we hope will provide important information for all interested parties: show practical examples for those looking for solution to the problem of water surplus or water scarcity in their settlement (or on a wider area, in the catchment); offer knowledge to those who want to learn more about water retention-based integrated water management; and also excite the wider public through target group-specific publications and events. We would like to have more and more people talking about the importance of water resources and the retaining of water. Taking all this, we wish to see more and more people embark on the path of practical implementation, let this be a well-established practice!

In 2016 the State Secretariat for Municipal Affairsrecognized – – at that time under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interior – the need to take action to develop and strengthen the adaptive capacity of local municipalities, thereby reducing the negative impacts of climate change on settlements and local communities. In order to achieve this, the first step was the LIFE-MICACC model project, which was implemented between 2017 and 2021. Building on the experiences and results of this project, the idea of the LIFE LOGOS 4 WATERS project was born, with the overall goal of improving the climate adaptation of municipalities by reducing water losing position, demonstrating, increasing acceptance and dissemination of coordinated, catchment-level integrated nature-based water management solutions.

Preparation, adaptation, cooperation. I think these will be the main keywords for years or decades to come. Moreover, these are the most important words of the challenges of our time.

Climate change is a global phenomenon that we will not be able to stop, but we will be able to prepare for the expected effects and adapt to the current situation. It is important to do all this in cooperation with each other, through common thinking and common planning, as extreme weather events know no administrative boundaries. In one settlement the flash flood causes severe damage, while the neighboring settlement suffers from water shortages. It is therefore worth addressing the issue and looking for the solution in an integrated way, at the level of a small catchment, in the cooperation of affected settlements and relevant professional organizations.

This website has been created to provide continuous information about the progress of the LIFE LOGOS 4 WATERS project, the implementation of the project activities, upcoming events and the results achieved. In addition, we would like to provide up-to-date information to those interested in the topic, and professional materials,methodological guides will also be published on the website, which we hope will increasingly lay the foundation for strengthening forward-looking responses to the exposure of Hungarian municipalities to climate change and provide settlement leaders with tools that also contribute to the achievement of sustainability goals.
